Finca La Herradura is home to Union de los Rios. It is also our family home. The place where we - Laura, Luke, our young son, and our animal friends - live our lives. The place where our son was born and where we hope he can live for as long as he chooses to. Home-away-from-home to many friends and family who’ve given love and labour, sweat and tears, to the long bumpy process of co-creation that brought us here.

Our intention in creating Union de los Rios was/is to share Finca La Herradura as both a site and protagonist in life-enabling activity. We hope to continues expanding our infrastructure. However, we’re not aiming to create a shiny centre or impersonal institution, but rather, to offer our hearts, guts, paradoxes, messy realities, and home, to an ongoing process of life-creating-conditions-for-more-life, destination unknown, unknowable.

As we make this offer, we don’t wish to obscure the fact that we are the legal owners of this land, a position tangled in state-backed power, inherited privilege and violence, and responsibilities. Some parts of us know this land as a living entity. Some parts as our home. Other parts still as an asset that provides our family security we are not yet willing to give up. We don’t pretend coherence. We’re not aspiring to purity or trying to perform our way out of accountability. We’re offering what we currently can, from where we’re currently at.
